“Leading the Third Place” provides essential business skills for managers to continue Grain’s growth
August 14th, 2018
The first class of Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen managers graduated from “Leading the Third Place,” a unique leadership training course created by Grain and the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS). This six-week course covers topics such as business acumen, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution and team building.
“Third Place” refers to the concept that Sociologist Ray Oldenberg coined in his book Great Good Place to describe the social destination outside of work or home. From Grain’s inception in 2015, the restaurant and bar has set out to be that neighborhood spot or “third place.”
To create the course curriculum, staff from UD PCS shadowed Grain managers and staffers to get a real-world picture of life in a busy restaurant. Their findings were matched with Grain’s objective of creating a powerful leadership team to support the restaurants’ growth.
“The large majority of our management team started in another position, either in the kitchen or serving guests. We value their in-depth knowledge of ‘The Grain Way’, since they had a large hand in creating it. UD PCS’s team put together the perfect class to layer on critical business skills to help us all grow,” explains Jim O’Donoghue, co-owner of Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen.
“This effort by an independent operator such as Grain to create a customized leadership class is uncommon in the industry, says UD PCS Program Coordinator Vic Wang.” ”Grain leaders recognized an opportunity to further develop their management team and trusted UD PCS with their vision.”
“Leading the Third Place” will be an ongoing course offered to Grain managers as new team members are added. Additional courses will also be developed with UD PCS based upon the needs of the organization.
Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen currently owns and operates three award-winning gastropubs in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Grain’s restaurants are designed to offer a warm inviting place to meet family and friends, and enjoy a shared experience of contemporary American fare. Grain’s concept is a casual and energizing space where well-crafted food and drink happily go hand-in-hand while live music fills the room. The company started in 2015 in Newark, DE and was quickly recognized as Delaware’s Best New Restaurant by the readers of Delaware Today Magazine. Combined, the three locations have earned over twenty awards. Visit http://www.MeetAtGrain.com for more information.
